Ethics – Morals or Common Morality

Morality is concerned with good evil. Every human relationship is governed by two considerations: what in fact exits and what in fact ought to be. Every group prescribes for its members certain rules of conduct which ought to be observed by them. For example, the family prescribes that the child should obey his parents. The state prescribes that the politicians’ ought to treat positions as a public trust. Thefirm prescribes that all its employees should work in cooperation. Thus, there are found certain rules of social behaviour in every group which should and ought to be observed by its members. These rules and principles concerned with good and evil as manifested to conscience constitute what is Calles MORALITY. These rules are admitted at large by community. Honesty, faithfulness, virtue, truthfulness is some of the moral concepts. When we say that a man is morally good, we mean he is trustworthy, honest and virtuous.

Moral rules or common, morality are the core concepts and language of ethics. The morals aspects of ethics absolutely depend upon or are concerned with the business practices. It has diereses impact on the decision makers and do also the personals working in the business organization. It is the body of moral rules which governs ordinary ethical problems.

These are the rules we live by most of times.

Whenever, a business manager has to take decisions, he/she take by keeping in mind the moral rules.

So morals are principles, beliefs and practices that describe values and guides are actions.

The basic principles of common morality or the language of ethics are as follows:

  • Promise keeping
  • Non – Malevolence
  • Mutual aid
  • Respect for persons, and
  • Respect for property

These principles have to be applied in the basic tools of the ethics – Business Ethics.

Morals are concerned with both external acts internal motives. Its violation is not punishable by the state. It is a universal concept. Morality is subjective.

Morality is concerned with what is deepest and intimate in human desire. Without moral norms human society would perish. It is a moral code which controls the individual so that he does what the group believes he should.

Whereas ethics can be defined as asset of values and principles underlined within a specific individual which recognizes or identifies him from rest of the society.

A member’s organization is impossibility. Without norms, behaviour of the employees/ individuals would be unpredictable. The standards of behaviour involved in norms, give order to the social relations in the firm. The interaction or cooperation can flow smoothy, if the individuals follow the group norms, and thus maintain ethical business environment.

Norms also influence individuals’ attitudes as well as has motives. Norms are specific demands to act, made by his group and are much more stable.

The individual becomes a good member to the extent he abides by the norms. The norms determine and guides the actions an individual.

If an individual/employee abides by the norms of workplace then the ethical environment could be build up and maintained.

The various norms also help to understand the ethics of a firm. These norms also reflect the value of an individual.

The business norms are enforced in order to produce ethical environment.
