Method of Grouping

The value of the mode, or the modal class should be located under this method when the difference between the maximum frequency and its next maximum frequency is not considerable greater. In such doubtful cases, the method of grouping should be followed as under:

Step 1.

Prepare a grouping table, or a statement of grouping the frequencies, In this statement, put the values, or the classes of values in the left hand column, and their corresponding frequencies in another column adjacent to it. Mark the frequency column as the column number 1. Then, in the column number 2, group the frequencies in tows again, beginning with the second frequency. Then in the 4th column, group the frequencies in threes beginning with the second frequency. Then again, in 6th column, group the frequencies in threes beginning with the third frequency. After groupings are over, identify the maximum figure (s) of each of the 6 columns either by a circle, or in any other manner.

Step 2.

At this step, prepare an analysis table to locate the modal value, or the modal class against which the maximum frequencies cluster around for maximum times. In this table, the probable modal values will be stated in the top horizontal line under the different columns, and the different columns numbers will be put at the left hand of the table. The values showing the maximum grouped frequencies in the Grouping Table will be identified by a mark in its respective column. At the bottom of this table, the number of such marks under the probable value columns will be totaled. The probable value showing the maximum of such total will be identified as the modal value, or the modal class as the case may be.
